Mathare Project - Documentary
Today, we had the pleasure to meet with Eric and Tobias from Mathare Foundation.
Mathare Foundation is based in the Mathare slum, a district of the capital Nairobi, Kenya. The foundation works with the children and youth in Mathare slum to give them an opportunity to express and discover their talents through photography, performing arts and sports. The co-founder, Eric Omwanda and his crew of mentors give lessons to the children in the mentioned fields.
The program goes beyond mere education, it is important to mentors to give back to their community and teach the children from a young age to become more confident. The interaction with art gives the youth a different perspective on life, but also shows them new opportunities and solutions, which they would not encounter from the background they come from.
The documentary is meant to show a different side of Africa, with the focus on local projects which give back to their youth community and encourage the kid’s creativity and help them to encounter new talents, which they would not experience normally.
The documentary will show the great work of Mathare Foundation.
Mathare Foundation ist im Mathare Slum ansässig, einem Stadtteil der Hauptstadt Nairobi in Kenia. Die Stiftung arbeitet mit Kindern und Jugendlichen aus dem Mathare Slum, sie bieten den Kindern die Möglichkeit mit Hilfe von Fotografie, darstellende Künste und Sport ihre Talente auszudrücken und zu entdecken. Mitbegründer, Eric Omwanda und sein Team von Mentoren, unterrichten und fördern die Kinder in den einzelnen Fächern.
Das Programm vermittelt nicht nur Bildung, sondern geht weit darüber hinaus. Den Mentoren ist es wichtig ihr Wissen und ihre Erfahrungen an die Gemeinde weiterzugeben und den Kindern von klein auf Selbstbewusstsein zu lehren. Die Interaktion mit den Künsten zeigt den Jugendlichen neue Lebensperspektiven auf und bietet ihnen Möglichkeiten und Lösungen für ihren zukünftigen Weg, welche sie auf Grund ihres sozialen Hintergrundes so nicht erfahren würden.
